3-Ingredient Truffle Soy Dumpling Dipping Sauce

Most dumpling sauces call for five or six ingredients. This one needs three — and it's better than most. The secret is truffle soy sauce, which brings enough depth and complexity on its own that you don't need much else.

The Base Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Gurume Umami Truffle Soy Sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil

Method

Combine all three ingredients in a small bowl. Stir. That's it. The sauce keeps in the fridge for up to a week.

The truffle soy provides the umami base and saltiness. The rice vinegar adds acidity that cuts through the fat in the dumpling filling. The sesame oil rounds everything out with a nutty finish. Together they hit every note you want in a dipping sauce — savoury, tangy, slightly rich — without any single flavour dominating.

Customisation Options

The base is intentionally neutral so it works with any style of dumpling. Here's how to take it in different directions:

Add heat: A teaspoon of chilli oil or a few drops of sriracha gives it a slow burn that works especially well with pork and cabbage dumplings.

Add aromatics: Finely grated ginger or thinly sliced spring onion add freshness and a sharper edge. Great with prawn or vegetable dumplings.

Add sweetness: Half a teaspoon of honey or a splash of mirin softens the acidity and makes it more approachable. Good for kids or if your dumplings are already well-seasoned.

Add citrus: A squeeze of fresh lime or yuzu juice takes it in a brighter, more aromatic direction. Excellent with seafood dumplings.

Make it creamy: Stir in a teaspoon of tahini or peanut butter for a richer, more complex sauce that works well as a drizzle over noodles too.

What Else Can You Use It For?

This sauce is too good to limit to dumplings. It works as a dipping sauce for spring rolls, gyoza, wontons, and bao. It's excellent drizzled over steamed fish or tofu. Thin it slightly with water and it becomes a quick noodle dressing. Add a little ginger and it doubles as a marinade.

Why Truffle Soy Makes a Better Dipping Sauce

Standard soy sauce is sharp and one-dimensional when used cold. Truffle soy sauce has been brewed for depth — the truffle adds an earthy, slightly floral note that makes the sauce taste layered and considered even when you've barely done any work. It's the ingredient that makes people ask what's in your sauce.
